Impact of mobile-based health messages on menstrual hygiene awareness among adolescent girls
Anita Sharma, Bishal Kumar and Pramila Thapa
Adolescent girls, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, often lack adequate knowledge and resources to manage menstruation in a hygienic manner, leading to compromised health, education, and psychosocial well-being. This research examines the impact of mobile-based health messaging on menstrual hygiene awareness among adolescent girls. The research’s primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of a mobile health (mHealth) intervention in increasing menstrual hygiene knowledge and improving hygienic practices. The research aims to
- Assess baseline menstrual hygiene awareness and practices,
- Evaluate the effects of mobile health messages on menstrual hygiene knowledge and practices, and
- Determine if increased awareness results in more hygienic behaviors.
It is hypothesized that adolescent girls who receive mobile-based health messages will demonstrate significantly higher awareness and adoption of hygienic practices compared to a control group. The research underscores the potential of mobile health (mHealth) interventions as a scalable, cost-effective way to address menstrual hygiene challenges, particularly in settings where traditional health education is limited [1-3]. The findings highlight the role of mHealth in reaching hard-to-reach populations and providing culturally sensitive, private education on menstrual health. This intervention could serve as an adjunct to school- or community-based education, helping to overcome logistical barriers [4-6].
